Founded by Denver native Michael Hommel in 1985 with an idea that nature should always a stones throw away.

Meet Our People

Designs By Sundown has been active in the community since its inception.

A volunteer group of employees formed the Environmental and Community Outreach (ECO) committee. The purpose: to review and select charitable projects within the community in need of assistance.

These three organizations very near and dear to our hearts include the Rocky Mtn Down Syndrome Association, LLS (Leukemia & Lymphoma Society), and Susan G Komen Breast Cancer.

At Designs By Sundown, we know the largest impact we can make as a landscape company is to save water, save plants, and select and re-use materials wisely.

Our goal is to improve the world around us by enhancing landscapes through environmentally conscious means, using the following...

  • Reuse Reusing materials whenever possible.
  • Recycle Working with recycled products as much as possible.
  • Reduce Reducing water consumption and waste by using new technology and products.
  • Relocate Working around mature trees and landscape elements and relocating them when feasible.
  • Redesign Redesigning older landscapes with water-saving ideas and using the right plants for each environment.

Conserving water through innovative design and water-wise installation is standard on all projects.

Our commitment is show through our use of drought tolerant plants, efficient irrigation components and soil amendment practices that exceed industry guidelines.

We all win by being good stewards of our environment and preserving it for future generations.

Winning over 100 awards has been an honor and a privilege unlike any other.

  1. The South Metro Denver Chamber of Commerce named Designs By Sundown their 2008 Small Business of the Year, a recognition of the company’s perseverance, innovation, and community.

  2. Designs by Sundown also has won the Colorado Ethics in Business Award (CEBA) presented by The University of Denver Daniels College of Business, in conjunction with ColoradoBiz magazine and the Samaritan Institute.

  3. Finally, the company has received the Better Business Bureau Longevity Award, given to a BBB Accredited Business consistently rated as “A+” for 20+ years.

Most recently, Designs By Sundown has won the prestigious Newman Award for "Best Landscape Architecture" in Rocky Mountain Region, awarded by the ICAA (Institute of Classical of Arts & Architecture).
